Yaounde Entry Requirements
Visa, immigration, and customs information
Visa Requirements
Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.
Cameroon maintains a restrictive visa policy with very limited visa-free access. Most foreign nationals must obtain a visa before traveling to Yaounde. The country has introduced an electronic visa system for certain nationalities, though traditional embassy applications remain common.
Very limited visa-free access is available only to nationals of certain Central African countries
This applies to members of the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (CEMAC). All other nationalities require a visa. Valid passport and yellow fever vaccination certificate still required.
Available for most nationalities including major Western countries
Cost: Approximately 50,000-100,000 XAF (85-170 USD) depending on visa type and duration, plus processing fees
Tourist, business, and transit eVisas are available. Print the approved eVisa and present it upon arrival. Some travelers report the system can be unreliable, so apply well in advance and consider embassy application as backup.
Traditional visa application at Cameroonian embassy or consulate remains an option and may be mandatory for some nationalities or visa types
Some nationalities may face additional scrutiny or requirements. Business visas require invitation letter from Cameroonian company. Multiple-entry visas available for frequent travelers. Embassy application may be more reliable than eVisa system.
Arrival Process
Upon arrival at Yaoundé Nsimalen International Airport, travelers proceed through immigration control, baggage claim, and customs inspection. The process is generally straightforward but can be slow during busy periods. Officials are thorough and expect all documentation to be in order.

Children must have their own passport and visa. Yellow fever vaccination is required for children over 1 year of age. Children under 18 traveling without both parents should carry a notarized letter of consent from the absent parent(s) in French or English, along with copies of the parents' passports. Single parents should carry the child's birth certificate showing sole custody or death certificate of other parent if applicable. Adoption papers should be carried for adopted children. These documents may be requested at immigration.
Importing pets to Cameroon requires advance planning. Dogs and cats need: valid rabies vaccination certificate (administered at least 30 days but not more than 12 months before arrival), veterinary health certificate issued within 10 days of travel, import permit from Cameroon Ministry of Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industries (apply at least 30 days in advance), microchip identification recommended. Pets must travel as cargo or in cabin depending on airline policy. Upon arrival, pets undergo veterinary inspection. Some breeds may be restricted. Birds and exotic animals have additional requirements. Quarantine may be required in some cases.
Tourist visas typically allow stays of 30-90 days. For longer stays, you must apply for visa extension at the Délégation Générale à la Sûreté Nationale in Yaounde before your visa expires. Extensions are not guaranteed and require justification, proof of funds, accommodation proof, and fees. Overstaying your visa results in fines and potential deportation. For stays longer than 3 months or for work purposes, you must apply for a residence permit (carte de séjour) and register with local authorities. Business activities require appropriate work permits obtained through sponsoring Cameroonian company. Student visas require enrollment confirmation from recognized educational institution.
Business visitors need a business visa obtained through eVisa system or embassy, which requires invitation letter from Cameroonian company or organization. Letter should include purpose of visit, duration, and guarantee of financial responsibility. Multiple-entry business visas available for frequent travelers. If conducting any paid work or extended business activities, work permit may be required. Temporary import permits needed for professional equipment, samples, or exhibition materials. Keep all business documentation accessible during entry process.
Journalists, photographers, and film crews must obtain special authorization from the Cameroon Ministry of Communication before arrival in addition to appropriate visa. Application should be submitted well in advance (at least 30 days) and include detailed information about the purpose of visit, locations to be visited, and equipment to be brought. Professional camera equipment may require temporary import permits. Unauthorized journalism activities can result in detention, equipment confiscation, and deportation. Always carry authorization documents and press credentials.
Passengers transiting through Yaounde without leaving the airport for less than 24 hours may not need a visa depending on nationality, but should verify with airline and Cameroonian embassy. If leaving the airport or staying longer than 24 hours, transit visa is required. Yellow fever vaccination certificate is still mandatory even for transit passengers. Ensure you have confirmed onward ticket and visa for final destination if required.
