⚠ Flash flooding occurs in low-lying neighbourhoods and valley roads after heavy downpours. The drainage infrastructure in parts of central Yaounde struggles with sustained rain. Intersections near the Mfoundi River can flood knee-deep within minutes. Stay on higher ground during storms. Avoid driving through standing water.
⚠ Laterite roads to outlying ecotourism sites become dangerously slick after rain. The route to Ebogo and other forest destinations south of the city can shift from passable to impassable in a single afternoon. Always confirm road conditions with your operator on the morning of departure. Build buffer time into rural excursions.
⚠ Mosquito activity spikes with the rains. Yaounde occupies a malaria-endemic zone. May's standing water from daily showers expands breeding grounds. Take antimalarial prophylaxis. Apply repellent at dusk. Sleep under treated nets. These steps form baseline precautions. They are not optional extras.
